You have to start somewhere

"The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step" -Lao Tzu

I've heard this expression many times, and to me it has always meant you must start somewhere to get anywhere, but where you start is not important. I've filed this away with other bits & bobs of wisdom that I lean on when seeking inspiration to begin a challenge, but it occurred to me very recently that I may be missing the point.

On a journey of 1000 miles there are a lot of single steps, and while the first step is important if one misses any step in between the journey still ends. Sometimes, that's a really big deal, but hopefully you learn enough about yourself in the process that the 1000 miles is less relevant than the individual steps that got you there.

I think it's so easy to get caught up in the origin and the destination that we lose the benefit of self exploration that occurs with each metaphorical "step". Interestingly, these steps are critical to shaping us into the person we would become. So I'm going to do something completely mental and set a goal for myself in August (because let's face it, New Years resolutions don't make the journey). I'm setting a goal to put more time and effort into the processes that make me feel happy and fulfilled, because I believe these things will make me better both personally and professionally.
